By day, the building cuts a decidedly geometric figure clad with dozens of textured rectangular metal panels that make up various patterns across the 50-foot-high structure while being durable and resistant to potential vandalism. Additionally, as a way to create some texture to the building without providing ledges for the local birds to roost, each horizontal layer of the building’s panels steps out and overhangs the lower panels by about six inches, giving the building a sculptural, three-dimensional quality. Larger ornamental formed patterns will adorn the 1.2-acre site’s exterior walls.
By night, the control building takes on a more dramatic profile because a lighting system installed around the base of the building shoots colors against those overhanging patterns, giving the appearance of glowing lines. The lighting system, which was designed by Sacramento based Sestak Lighting Design, is programmed to emit different colors at various times of the year to commemorate holidays and other civic events. Multiple luminaires by Philips Color Kinetics are installed in the city sidewalk and at six locations around the perimeter walls.
